Day 1: Arrival in Pori On arrival in Pori kindly make your way to the district of Yyteri for your check in at Mäntyluoto Hotel, close to the sea. You have the rest of the day free to explore this unique town and its surrounds.
Day 2: Observation towers at Ooviiki, Teemuluoto and Kaarluoto Distance: Approx. 5-6 km Bright and early after breakfast at 6 am we make our way to the sheltered bay at Preiviiki, situated in the largest delta region of the Nordic countries. The Ooviiki tower offers great views of this sheltered bay, where swans and other waterfowl gather to rest during their migration. You are likely to see geese, swans, ducks, scaup, coots, terns and gulls. From there we continue to the next observation tower, Teemuluoto. The Teemuluoto tower is located in the river delta and is a great place to see migrating birds. The area is a nesting site for a variety of wetland birds, but the broad leaf woodland habitat also attracts a variety of birds; particularly songbirds. Our hiking continues to the next observation tower at Kaarluoto. Here the low water level and the silt offer many migratory birds as well as other species a place of calm where they can feed and rest. This flat bay is also an important nesting ground for various species of waterfowl. After visiting the three observation towers and discovering the myriad species of birds we will travel back to the hotel where you have the rest of the day free to further explore the town and surrounding areas.
Day 3: Puurijärvi and Isosuo National Park Distance: Approx. 6 km After breakfast at 6 am we leave to the Puurijärvi and Isosuo National Park where we spend the morning hiking and birding. Some 7,000 years ago, this National Park was still below sea level. The post-glacial uplift of land resulted in the old sea bed began to gradually change, with large moors, pools and lakes emerging. Today Lake Puurijärvi is for the most part overgrown and is one of the largest wetlands in southern Finland with diverse fauna and numerous species of breeding birds. Puurijärvi is also an important resting place for migratory birds and is protected against hunting. It’s possible to see swans, cranes, geese and lots of species of waterfowl. Species found in the area include the Osprey, Black Woodpecker, Eurasian Golden Plover, Common Crane and Whooper Swan. From Puurijärvi we will hike to Isosuo, an upland moor, which is home to numerous bird species. From the birdwatching tower you can enjoy an unhampered view of Ospreys’ nest. Perhaps you will also spot a rare European beaver on the moor. After the excursion to the National Park with its unique natural environs and abundance of bird species you are free to spend the afternoon as you please. Suggested activities include exploring Pori city centre and visiting The Ark Nature Centre.
Day 4: Silty terrain at Yyteri, Hilska observation tower and the rock islands at Kallo Distance: Approx. 5 km Today you will visit the Yyteri dunes area which is part of the Bothnian Sea National Park. There are wooden platforms to walk on, enabling you to fully explore the magnificent Yyteri dunes and beach. It’s one of the best places in Finland to see wading birds, which congregate in their thousands. The season starts straight after the ice melts following the long winter and it lasts through to October. Aside from the beach at Yyteri numerous breeding sites are also visited by various species of birds and you can clearly see how the migratory routes of some species of waterfowl and birds of prey trace the coastline and how those of other species follow the boundaries of the forest. From Yyteri we will make our way to the birdwatching tower at Hilska from where you will have a wonderful view of the delta region as well as views across the Baltic Sea. This is an ideal vantage point for spotting ducks, gulls and terns. After visiting the tower at Hilska we will proceed to the rock island of Kallo. Kallo is a good place to spot species from the open sea, such as Velvet Scoter, Black Scoter and Common Eiger. At Kallo you will have the opportunity to hike and explore the island a bit more before returning to the hotel in the afternoon. You are free to spend the rest of the day as you please. You can walk along the beach at Yyteri, take in the pleasant sea air or perhaps try your hand at Frisbee golf, which is hugely popular among the Finns. In the evening you can visit one of the many restaurants in the town and sample some Finnish specialities.
Day 5: Selection of locations for birdwatching, depending upon the season After an early breakfast we will decide upon our destination for the day's excursion. Your guide will recommend the best locations for birdwatching in line with the season. Enjoy the day outdoors in the lap of nature and perhaps you will spot some species of birds that you have not seen so far during your tour. In the afternoon we will return to the hotel and you are free to spend the final evening as you please.
Day 6: Departure After breakfast you will still have enough time to pack your suitcases and perhaps enjoy a brief stroll along the beach before checking out of your hotel at around noon and making your way back home.
