Arrival day: Welcome to Iloranta Arrival to Helsinki-Vantaa airport and transfer to Iloranta farmstead. Lunch will be served on arrival and then you will have time to check into your comfortable room and freshen up. You will then meet for a walk around Iloranta to familiarise yourself with your farmstead and the surrounding area. After the walk you can enjoy a complete sauna experience. First we gather herbs from the nearby forest for a foot spa. Next we learn about the sauna etiquette and the effectiveness and health benefits it brings. We start the sauna ritual with body scrubs and foot spas, followed by traditional sauna bath with demonstrations of whisking, an essential part of Finnish folk healing. In the evening you can choose between; night time fishing (possible only during the autumn months), yoga, a gentle evening stroll or just relaxing at the farmstead.
Day 2: Live like the locals do After breakfast you take a guided rafting, fishing- and crabbing trip on the crystal clean waters of Lake Iso-Roine (Big Roine. During the crabbing season, (end of August – September) you are fishing for: pikeperch, bass, vendace and crayfish. Once we have our catch we prepare it together and then cook it outside on the beach. For dessert there are Finnish pancakes straight from the pan. Full from lunch, we return through the forest letting our senses take in the different aspects and allow ourselves time to totally unwind, relax and achieve a pure sense of mindfulness. In the Afternoon you can try Nordic Walking in the surrounding area of Häme province, before returning to the smoke sauna. In summer, after the warm heat of the smoke sauna, you can walk across the white sand for a swim in the lake. In winter you can dive into an ice hole! Both are incredible experiences! In the evening you can take a trek into the forest. In the dark it becomes a different world and awakens all your senses. You can smell the evening fragrances of the spruce trees and listen to the enveloping silence, broken only by the forest night time noises. You can almost picture friendly goblins hiding behind the trees watching you.
Day 3: A guided forest trek and food straight from natures table After breakfast we take a guided forest tour and discover the treasures of the Häme forest. The nature trail of Iloranta leads via Mäyräkallio (Badger cliff) along the marshland to Kotivuori (Home mountain) and through the wild-nut grove to the old wicket. Along the way your guide will regale you with the tales of the animals, trees and ecology bringing the forest to life. The outdoor lunch consists of; forest mushroom soup in a malt bread cup, campfire coffee and you can toast buns on sticks in front of the open fire. Now you can try your hand at baking your own bread. The recipe uses an ancient sourdough made from forest bush rye. Once ready you can take back a freshly backed loaf straight from the oven - Delicious!
